The experience behind the advice

From financial rigorto operating perspective.

Matt began his career at Ernst & Young, where he learned the discipline behind dependable financial information—how the details connect, why accuracy matters, and what it takes to understand the full financial picture.

He later moved from public accounting into Controller and CFO leadership inside a growing, founder-led business. That put him much closer to the decisions themselves: managing cash through growth, building forecasts and budgets, evaluating margins and pricing, weighing hiring and investment decisions, and helping leadership understand the tradeoffs behind each move.

Working inside the business changed the way Matt viewed finance. Reports matter, but their real value comes from helping an owner see what is happening early enough to make a better decision. The numbers have to connect to the realities of customers, people, capacity, risk, and growth.

Matt founded Torvik Consulting to bring that combination of financial discipline and hands-on operating judgment directly to business owners.

The philosophy

“The numbers should domore than explain the past. They should show wherethe business is headed—and what matters now.”

Good financial leadership starts with the owner’s definition of success. Torvik keeps the financial picture in view, investigates changes that matter, and translates what the numbers are saying into better decisions. Progress is measured, the outlook is updated, and the focus shifts as the business changes.

What shaped the approach

Experience onboth sides of thefinancial picture.

Matt’s approach comes from seeing finance in two very different environments: the disciplined standards of a global accounting firm and the day-to-day realities of helping lead a growing business.

01

Financial discipline

Ernst & Young provided the technical foundation: accuracy, rigor, and respect for what reliable financial information requires.

02

Operating experience

Controller and CFO leadership brought Matt inside the business, where cash, hiring, pricing, investment, and growth decisions had immediate consequences.

03

Founder perspective

Working closely with owners taught Matt that the useful answer is rarely another report. It is knowing what the information means and what deserves attention now.

04

Direct accountability

Matt stays personally involved in every engagement, bringing continuity from ongoing financial oversight through the conversation, focused action, and the next decision.
